*Official Position Description: In the Office of Geotechnical Engineering supervises the Soils & Foundation Technicians assigned to production field crew in gathering soil & rocks samples (i.e., ensures that field crew uses proper safety procedures; reviews sample evaluation documents to check results & identify areas where more samples are needed & checks storage of samples to ensure proper transporting methods are used; trains employees; measures performance & performs evaluations). Ensures that all utilities are cleared & handles problems with property owners. Coordinates drilling operation with district personnel including engineers, county managers & flagmen. Oversees getting drill rig to the prescribed locations; ensures that sampling is performed at the proper intervals & boring are terminated at the proper depths.Participates in drilling work; electronically or physically records information from samples noting specific characteristics to include texture, color, consistency &/or contents; classifies core samples based upon visual evaluations; performs blow-count test; calculates resistance (N-Value); measures ground water level with electric tape; calculates elevation & adjusts drilling depth to meet target depths or elevations; follows Specifications for Geotechnical Explorations (SGE) guidelines & drilling instructions; installs slope inclinometer & monitors well installations; collects & preserves peat, soil & rock samples; conducts soil analysis. Performs field surveys using Global Positioning System (GPS) & survey equipment.Mobilizes, operates & performs routine maintenance on earth drilling equipment (e.g., truck-mounted auger, hollow stem augers, high speed wire-line core drill and bulldozer). Cleans equipment & containers; recommends repairs & troubleshoots problems; performs safety checks on equipment to ensure proper functioning of drills. Lifts up to 96 pounds (e.g., full size bags of concrete, bentonite, augers).Operates laptop computer, mobile devices & related software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; KRONOS, Enterprise Information Management System (EIMS)) to read & send email communication, enter time worked, communicate with coworkers & enter information. Performs miscellaneous other duties such as flagging & installing geotechnical devices. Qualifications 18 mos. trg. or 18 mos. exp. in operation of heavy earth drilling equipment (e.g., truck mounted earth auger, hollow stem core auger, drive rod equipment, high-speed wire-line core drill, front end loader, drag line crane, backhoe or earth mover) & related safety practices; 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in employee training & development; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in reading survey & construction plans & in cataloging core samples; valid class "A" commercial driver's license. -Or 12 mos. exp. as Soils & Foundation Technician, 53261. -Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above. Knowledge of lead work; supervision; ODOT*, heavy equipment, & traffic control safety practices; agency policies & procedures* (i.e., ODOT, Specifications for Geotechnical Explorations); Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, EIMS, Kronos. Skill in operating drilling equipment, bulldozer, electric tape, GPS & survey equipment, truck-mounted auger, hollow stem augers, high speed wire-line core drill. Ability to deal with problems involving few variables in familiar context; count, do basic addition & subtraction; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things; cooperate with coworkers on group projects; maintain accurate records; demonstrates strength to lift up to 96 lbs.(*)Developed after employment. Available Position: GeoStructures is seeking an experienced driller to help expand the drilling operations. Work includes but is not limited to:
GEOTECHNICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL DRILLING

  • Operates drill rig and oversees drilling operations for auger borings, standard penetration test (SPT) sampling, rock coring, monitoring wells, and other types of drilling, as required.
  • Collects and logs complete field data to the specifications and job instructions.
  • Training and supervision of drilling assistant on the drilling site.
  • Communication with project managers, clients, and supervisors.
  • Responsible for daily production and efficient use of drill crew’s time as required by scope of work for individual projects.
  • Training for the position can be provided, however, a background in soil science, geology, or earth science is helpful.

MAINTENANCE

  • Responsible for maintenance, repair and general condition of the drill rigs and other equipment.

SAFETY

  • Responsible for promoting and adhering to a safe work practice.
  • Use required personal protective equipment while performing all functions.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION COMPLIANCE

  • Driving of DOT regulated vehicles and all responsibilities and knowledge that is required to stay in compliance with DOT requirements.
  • Daily inspections of equipment to satisfy DOT requirements, including all proper record keeping as required by DOT regulations.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or technical associate degree.
  • Must have a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Must have or obtain 40-hour Hazmat training and maintain Hazwoper updates.
  • Ability to travel including occasional weekends: and extended periods. Ability to work independently.
  • Work areas mainly in Philadelphia & the suburbs, some in PA, NJ, NY, DE & MD.
  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both oral and written
  • Must be able to safely and routinely lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work safely and efficiently outdoors in all types of weather
