In-Person Training

Subsurface Investigation Qualification (FHWA-NHI-132079)
This three-day course is normally offered 1-2 times per year at various locations.
Taught by NHI-approved instructors, this course is part of a series to develop a training and qualification/certification program for geotechnical inspectors and field personnel. This course is intended for drillers, drilling inspectors, engineers, geologists, and technicians involved in field data collection and quality assurance of subsurface investigations.  The course follows FHWA guidelines and practices for subsurface investigations. Many states now require this qualification to work on DOT projects. A partial list of topics addressed in the course are exploration equipment and methods, safety, borehole sealing, drilling and sampling requirements and criteria, proper soil and rock visual classification and descriptions, common drilling errors, and dealing with difficult subsurface site conditions. A two-hour qualification exam is administered at the end of the course. To remain certified, you must either retake the exam or take the refresher course every five years.

One-Day Training Refresher for Field Inspection of Geotechnical Site Investigations
NDA partners with The Maryland State Highway Administration to offerNHI SSI Course No. 132079, that when taken within 5 years of passing the NHI SSI Course, would be an acceptable substitute to taking the complete NHI SSI course for those who drill or inspect drilling for the Maryland State Highway Administration. You must have completed the National Highway Institute’s Subsurface Investigation Qualification Course (NHI Course No. 132079) prior to taking this course.
