- CSA 2010, presented by Stefanie Copeland, Missouri DOT
Stefanie has been with MODOT as an enforcement investigator for almost 6 years and is stationed out of the St. Louis Region. She has been applying the CSA 2010 program since the start in February 2008. She is also an instructor for the program in training other investigators.
- Safety Presentation, presented by Rick Hutchings, Central Mine Equipment Company
Upon graduating junior college in 1974, Rick worked with Consolidation Coal Company eleven years as a driller and helper. He has spent the past twenty-five years with Central Mine Equipment Company as a field sales representative. Some of Rick’s duties include working with customers on sales, troubleshooting, technical support, product development and safety presentations.
- Wireline Casing Advanced Systems, presented by William "Butch" Babcock, Hole Products
In April 2007, William Babcock along with Brad Oothoudt as Managing Partners & owners, began Hole Products, servicing the drilling industry with in-hole drill tools and supplies.
William Babcock is the Vice President of Hole Products and has over 32 years of experience in drilling, management/operations. William graduated from the University of Georgia. He was previously, employed by Law Engineering, Charlotte, North Carolina for 8 years as their Drilling Services Manager. He later went on to work for Brainard-Kilman/Boart Longyear and spent 21 years in senior sales and management positions.
Hole Products services the Geotechnical, Environmental, Mineral Exploration, Water Well, Geothermal, and Construction drilling markets.
- Sonic Drilling, presented by Rob Caho, Diedrich Drill
Rob Caho is the Director of Sales & Marketing for Diedrich Drill and has over 30 years of experience in drilling, management/operations, sales/marketing and training. Prior to joining Diedrich, Rob worked with Bergerson Caswell Well Drilling Co. for over 11 years as their Operations Manager.
Rob's other positions included Division Manager of Exploration Technology, Inc., Owner/Operator of Rocket Manufacturing, and Drill Foreman at Professional Service Industries.
Rob also served as President of the Minnesota Groundwater Association and President of the Minnesota National Drilling Association.
- Business Diversity - Geothermal Drilling, presented by Rich Clarke, SIMCO Drilling Equipment
Richard E. Clarke has been working in the drilling industry for the past 25 years as the Director of Sales and Marketing for SIMCO Drilling Equipment. He holds a BSBA degree from Drake University and an MBA in Management from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Prior to joining SIMCO he spent 10 years working in the sales and marketing departments for several hydraulic component manufacturers. He also spent several years teaching senior level sales and marketing courses at Iowa State University and Simpson College.
- Grouting for Geo-Exchange Installations, presented by Kurt Kash, Baroid Industrial Drilling Products
Kurt Kash is a Senior Field Sales Representative for Baroid I.D.P., a Product Service Line of Halliburton. He is a Halliburton trained and certified drilling fluids engineer with 10 years experience in all phases of drilling and grouting. Kurt is responsible for the states of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota. He has experience in HDD, Water Well, Drilled Shafts, Mining and specializes in Geothermal Heat Loops. Kurt lives in Marion, Iowa. Along with his wife, Carolyn, they have 6 children and 5 grandchildren and he is an all-around good guy.
- Mississippi River Bridge, presented by Craig Kaibel, Geotechnology
Craig C. Kaibel, PE, is a Senior Engineer on the Transportation/Infrastructure Market Team at Geotechnology. His experience includes a variety of civil and geotechnical engineering assignments. Engineering responsibilities include project design, construction observation and management, supervising field explorations and investigations, collecting field data, and the nondestructive testing of drilled shafts (cross-hole sonic logging, CSL) for bridge construction.
- Rig Refurbishment, presented by Brian Snelten, Rig Source
Mr. Snelten has over 15 years of experience in the drilling industry as a water well driller for his father’s family business, environmental consultant for companies such as the Shaw Group and URS Corporation and Operations Manager for Rig Source Inc. Mr. Snelten’s responsibilities for Rig Source include management of the rental division, tooling sales for auger/direct-push equipment and water well/geothermal drill sales. Mr. Snelten is also a licensed Illinois Professional Geologist and Illinois Licensed Water Well contractor and is currently the Vice President of the Illinois Association of Groundwater Professionals (IAGP) and sits on two subcommittees for the National Ground Water Association (NGWA).

On-Site Drilling Solutions
Michael R. West is a third generation driller with extensive experience in industrial drilling including water, environmental, construction and oil/gas drilling. This experience combined with an A.S. degree in Petroleum Technology and a B.S. degree in Geology gives Michael the ability to match the correct drilling method, equipment and fluid design to the geology and other environmental conditions.
After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford in 1987, Michael worked as a driller, pipeline foreman and a drilling supervisor until 2005. At that time Michael became a Field Sales Rep for Baroid IDP where he received specialized training in fluid design and maintenance and grouting (bentonite and cement based). At Baroid IDP Michael worked in all aspects of the industrial drilling industry, providing service to everything from pond sealing to 24-foot diameter tunnels.
In March of 2010, Michael started Onsite Drilling Solutions so he could provide a more complete service to the customer utilizing all of his experience and education.
- Case Studies on Geothermal Installation, presented by Brian Dorwart, Brierley Associates
Brian Dorwart is a Senior Associate with Brierley Associates. He is a registered Professional Geologist and Professional Engineer with more than 30 years experience in the construction and engineering field. His specialization for the past 18 years is in trenchless design, construction, and industrial grouting both nationally and internationally. Work over the years has included extensive geotechnical instrumentation research and field installations including development of specialty grouts for instrumentation packages. He is also a board member of the Northeast Trenchless Association, on the Board of Advisors of the Trenchless Technology Center, and an active member of NASTT and ASCE for trenchless projects.
- Standard Penetration Tests with Oversized Equipment, presented by Dr. A. Lutenegger, University of Massachusetts - Amherst
Dr. Alan J. Lutenegger is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst where he has been a member of the faculty since 1989. He received his B.S. degree in Construction Engineering in 1975 from Iowa State University and his M.S. (1977) and Ph.D. (1979) degrees in Geotechnical Engineering, also from Iowa State University. Between 1979 and 1983, he was a consulting Geotechnical Engineer in Des Moines, Iowa. From 1983 to 1989, he was Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Clarkson University. From 2000 to 2006, he was Department Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UMass, having stepped down in July of 2006 to return to full-time teaching and geotechnical research. His area of expertise is in Geotechnical Engineering and Soil Mechanics, primarily related to physical-chemical behavior of clays, performance of shallow foundations, and in situ testing of soils. Over the past 5 years, his research work has been focused on the Design and Behavior of Helical Screw-Piles and Screw-Anchors, the behavior of expansive clays, the mechanisms of lime stabilization in clays and the fundamental understanding of the Standard Penetration Test. He has authored or coauthored over 120 technical papers related to Geotechnical Engineering and has advised 45 graduate students in his 26 years as a faculty member.
- The Lighter Side of Drilling, presented by Patrick R. Replogle, L. Robert Kimball & Aassociates, Inc.
Patrick R. Replogle is Drilling Operations Supervisor for L.R. Kimball, based in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. Mr. Replogle is presently the President of the National Drilling Association Tri-State Chapter. He has been with Kimball since 1979, and Supervisor of drilling Operations for 27 years.
Married with 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren,
Pat’s wife, Kim, manages two funeral homes and wakes him up each morning by checking his pulse.
The happy couple resides in Salix, Pennsylvania.
